Both Porter and I started working with people in-person when we started making our respective albums and appreciated how much more collaborative you can get. Our intent was to make music that would reflect our friendship.

"Shelter" is a 2016 single by Porter Robinson and French music producer Madeon. It was released on August 11, 2016, and was accompanied by the back-to-back Shelter Live Tour.

An animated music video for the song, dubbed Shelter the Animation, was released in October 2016 as a collaboration between Robinson and A-1 Pictures.

Background[]

The base of Shelter came together really naturally and kind of easily. Completing it was a lot harder for us because we're so prone to analysis and definitely perfectionists.

–Porter Robinson[2]

Robinson and Madeon began discussing a possible collaboration after the release of the latter's debut album, Adventure, in 2015, though it took them some time to meet and spend time together in the studio. Madeon also stated that the song "has a lot of elements to it that are magical that [they] don't really understand how [they] came up with it, and all of [their] other elements [he knows] very well how [they] achieved from a technical standpoint."[2]

Lyrics[]

I could never find the right way to tell you
Have you noticed I've been gone?
'Cause I left behind the home that you made me
But I will carry it along

It's a long way forward, so trust in me
I'll give them shelter like you've done for me
And I know I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
Until you're gone

When I'm older, I'll be silent beside you
I know words won't be enough
And they won't need to know our words or our faces
But they will carry on for us

It's a long way forward, so trust in me
I'll give them shelter like you've done for me
And I know I'm not alone you'll be watching over us
Until you're gone

It's a long way forward, trust in me
I'll give them shelter like you've done for me
And I know I'm not alone, you'll be watching over us
Until...
